Chinese New Year is just around the corner, which means feasts for days. This is my grandmas legendary pickles called achar. It's made by tossing vinegar-blanched veg into a sweet and nutty spicy blend. ⁣

Despite being a very adult dish, I always associate achar with babies. Whenever my grandma held one of her baby grandkids,  she'd squawk to them "achar achar achar". I guess it was her version of "goo goo ga ga"

New Year reflections⁣ ⁣ Well, that's another y New Year reflections⁣
⁣
Well, that's another year in Glasgow, and what a ride. This is the year that lockdowns ended and the country opened up. So despite living here for a while now, it felt like the first year that I could actually experience the city. I could eat at restaurants, travel, meet new people, and soak up what Glasgow is all about.⁣
⁣
However, it was also a year of unexpected challenges. It was the first year that I really began to understand what life without my mum looks like, the first year that I could actually experience grief.⁣
⁣
My mum passed away in 2019, and just three days after her funeral, I was on a plane to start a new life in Scotland. There was no time to grieve then; I was too busy sorting visas, bank accounts and NHS numbers. That, and I was only in Scotland for 2 weeks. I had to fly back to Australia to film Catalyst for the ABC, doing my best to smile on camera as we raced around the country. It was back to Scotland after that, and I tried to settle in by finding a home to live in and a job. But then the pandemic hit, kicking off two years of uncertainty. ⁣
⁣
Until this year, there simply hasn't been any time to grieve. Every day has been about survival, taking one day at a time as I navigated a new life in a new country in a new world. But all of that locked up grief has crept back in slowly, confusingly and unexpectedly, and I'm still trying to make sense of it all. So whatever 2023 brings, I'm sure it'll be another wild ride. ⁣
