How to cook in a hotel room⁣ ⁣ While in Chicag How to cook in a hotel room⁣
⁣
While in Chicago, I had a craving for sticky rice (aka zong zi). But there was a conundrum, I had no microwave in my hotel room! It turns out though, there's a lot you can do with a coffee machine, ice bucket and bath towel...⁣

When you've got too many pineapples...⁣ ⁣ make When you've got too many pineapples...⁣

make pineapple tarts! Probably my favourite Malaysian sweet (kueh) of all time. It's made by grating fresh pineapple and cooking it down until you get a lusciously caramelised jam. You then roll the pineapple jam into small balls and anoint on top of shortcrust pastry. Bake and enjoy!⁣

Wait for the pull...⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ These deep fried Wait for the pull...⁣⁣
⁣⁣
These deep fried breads are a comfortingly calorific way to begin your day. Called yau char kwai (Cantonese) or you tiao (Mandarin), they can be eaten savoury with congee or sweet with some sugar. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
My recipe is a yeasted dough that's left to prove overnight. This makes the dough very stretchy! The dough is rolled flat and cut into small rectangles. You place one rectangle on top of another and seal it with a chopstick. You can then stretch and deep fry the dough, giving you a bread that resembles two people. ⁣
⁣
And yes, the idea of a deep fried bread immortalising two people is a bit masochistic, but just wait til you google the folk lore behind it!⁣

For the past 5 weeks, I've been taking pottery les For the past 5 weeks, I've been taking pottery lessons, and it has been the most fun I've had in ages. I've learned to use the wheel for the first time, making simple objects like mugs and bowls.

Here are all the before pics, in different stages of creation, from first throws to shaping to glazing. Over the next week, they'll get fired and the final pieces will be revealed!

For anyone interested in pottery, @craftpotterystudio have been simply amazing. The classes have been informative and really supportive, and you come away with quite a few pieces. Here's hoping some of them are good enough to appear in my cookbook!
